The Value Of Work

Many people in our fast-paced world, see their work as a necessary, never ending grind that has value only in the money that they derive from it. Work then, becomes a negative yoke. Living for leisure often results. The "Thank God it's Friday" mentality becomes the prevalent attitude. Far too many end up living a life of mediocrity: they get up in the morning to go to work, to come home and go to bed, to get up in the morning and go to work. The treadmill goes round and round with little hope for change.

God never intended our lives to be such. He created us to work, that is, to create and contribute. If what you do is moral (does not violate God's Word) and beneficial to others, then you have every reason to find satisfaction in it.

Work plays an important role in our development and growth; the conflict that is so much a part of work can be helpful in shaping us and polishing us as we appropriately respond to it. Work is necessary, enables us to survive, and teaches us how to get along with others.

The key to work being fulfilling instead of frustrating is found in perspective. Your perspective on work includes the twins of attitude and aptitude.

  1. Attitude
Having a positive attitude about yourself and what you do, can't be overemphasized. Attitude determines the amount of energy we have available for the tasks involved in our work. If your attitude causes you to view work as a dirty four-lettered word, then you won't find meaning from your efforts.
  2. Aptitude
Know yourself. How has God built you? What are your talents and abilities? How does your previous experience contribute to what you're able to do?

To increase aptitude, go back to school. Take special classes that enable you to tackle new tasks. Don't be intimidated if it's been awhile since you've been in school. Older students often make the best students.

It's important to remember that Attitude + Aptitude = Altitude!

Work isn't to be worshipped and isn't to be abhorred; work can be enjoyed, endured, engaged and enlightening. I hope your work brings glory to God and satisfaction to you.
