"May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us - yes, establish the work of our hands." - Psalm 90:17 Life is certainly a tough venture. Even though we may live a great number of years, they still seem short when they draw to a close. The very old can recall childhood memories as though they were yesterday, and time seems to slip away with little or no ability to get all that could be from its moments. Such is life. The Christian worldview would have us to understand that we are vapors that linger for a time and are soon gone. At funerals it is custom to have beautiful, fragrant flowers to pay respect for the dearly departed. This is appropriate considering life begins as the flower; from seed to full flower but a short time; full and fragrant soon to wilt and whither. Lest this depress us it should be noted that within that short sojourn of growth much beauty and blessing can be gleaned. Even beyond the moments of this time and space boundary, there is a glorious future infused in every redeemed soul. Psalm
Ninety is a Psalm of Moses. It teaches us to be aware of the transitory nature
of this life so as to yield every bit to God and seek His Presence in all of our
affairs. God desires only good for us (Jeremiah 29:11) and He labors within us
to that end. Our prayerful whisperings to Him should entreat His favor so that
we may be useful in all of the time allotted us. Only God can establish our
work. The men of historical renown may be remembered but their work will decay
unless they are established by One that is eternal. Only Jesus supplies the Life
needed to last. He says that we can do nothing apart from Him. I believe that.
