Self-DevelopmentOne of the biggest trends for the future concerns the field of self-development. The booming economy and the subsequent benefits in terms of money and options have provided the means for people to pursue self-development in ways not possible in the past. This has led to the production of books, tapes and other programs designed to help people explore their potential. The opportunity for growth is enormous. The question that begs an answer is why self-development? Why spend money and time in such a pursuit? No question about it, the more we develop our God-given potential, the more benefit we can bring to those around us. The purpose for self-development isn’t centered on the personal gains that come. No, the greater good is derived as we become more useful to others. As we grow we become more valuable to our family, our business or place of employment, our community at large. This means that everybody benefits. Ours is a society constantly being bombarded with messages meant to puff-up self-importance. We are being told that we deserve the latest gadget and gizmo; that we ought to put ourselves and our wants and wishes above all else. Advertising capitalizes on our tremendous tendency to self-interest. But self-development should be for more than self-gratification. It must be motivated be a genuine desire to make a difference in the world around us. To impact in a positive way, the lives of others so that they can become their best, is the real reason to develop self. Not just so that we can feel better about whom we are. What are some of the ways we can grow that will provide benefit to others? Well, for starters, developing the techniques of civility. This is a great need today. In the last several decades an erosion of manners and good speech has taken place. The evidence is in the higher rates of domestic abuse, school shootings, workplace violence and road rage. The lack of civility is not the only factor, but it’s a significant one. Learning to respect and honor others is a great quest for self-development. People that are well mannered stand out in our world. Knowing how to speak without vulgarity is a mark of intelligence. Handling stressors and strains without bad behavior is a mark of maturity. Companies and public institutions are discovering this need and they have to take constructive steps to correct past neglect. Another area of self-development worthy of attention has to with personal disciplines. Things such as time management, appearance, communication skills, and money management, fall into this category. Business is starting to once again focus upon basics. Recent studies are showing that the casual approach to business attire so popular today, may be causing a general laxity in many areas causing a decline in productivity. Look for a shift back to a more professional style of dress. Also, look for a greater emphasis to be placed upon written and verbal communication skills, as well as punctuality and the ability to get things done in a timely fashion. The people who get the basics will be noticed and have a greater likelihood of advancement. Money management is also important. There is much material in the self-development field to help a person get a grip on handling their money. When boiled down, the best advice being given is age-old. Get and stay out of debt; don’t work for money but make money work for you; keep good records and cut, cut, cut your taxes! Self-development can free you up to be of service to others. Being your best enables you to help make things better. You’ll never regret discovering the potential you have; you’ll never finish your discovery. The world is changing and those who win change as well. Spend your money and time on becoming the best you can be and then go and make a difference. |
